I came across a vet, years ago, who told me of a relatively rare condition in cats, which all vets know about but few mention - the stuck purr. Every now and again a pet-owner presents herself at the vet's practice, extracts a bulging-faced cat and slides it across the table for him to sort out. He has seen it all before.
Cat owner confirms that, yes, a couple of days ago the cat did seem to leave one of its purrs 'incomplete' now you mention it.
The usual procedure apparently, is to take the troubled creature to the back surgery, to tinker and prize and tap around the furry throat until, with a sudden roar and upset, the purr and a build-up of subsequent and unfulfilled purrs come out in a big rush. In severe cases the exhalation can take in excess of half-an-hour I heard. Also, apparently, during exhalation most cats step backwards round the room, cautiously and with bulging eyes.
